Merging Two Apartments into a Singular Living Space in Saint-Gilles, Brussels - 165 m2
This project involved the seamless unification of two separate apartments into a single, fluid, and cohesive living environment. The transformation was driven by a desire to rethink circulation flows and maximize spatial potential. The kitchen was strategically repositioned, while a new entrance hall—spacious, welcoming, and intuitively placed—now anchors the point where the two units converge.
At the heart of the design lies the kitchen, a sculptural centerpiece inspired by the landscapes of Madeira—particularly the rocky islet of Ilhéu da Pocariça, captured through the lens of Maxime De Campenaere. The central island, both organic and architectural, fuses red travertine with undulating Movingui wood veneer, evoking raw materiality and natural motion. A bold, enveloping backdrop in deep red brings together small-format tiles, Fenix surfaces, and tinted Aniegré veneer in a refined, immersive composition. Solid wood handles echo the kitchen island’s design, enhancing the tactile and visual cohesion of the space.
In line with an eco-conscious approach, the original natural stone flooring was preserved, serving as both a structural and visual foundation. Where modifications were needed post-demolition, small-format tiles and large slabs were thoughtfully introduced, creating soft, seamless transitions. The choice to mix and match different floor tiles allows to warm up the mood of the entryway while elegantly highlighting the curved passage leading into the main living areas.
