Designing a charming retreat in the Belgian Ardennes - 600m2
Nestled in Belgium’s Luxembourg province, this former barn underwent a remarkable transformation into a luxurious retreat. Enhancing comfort on the first and second floors was essential to accommodate up to 20 guests in this high-end getaway.
To strike the perfect balance between intimacy and shared experiences, Maxime de Campenaere Studio designed suites that allow families to form smaller, private units while still enjoying their time together. Originally, the upper floors were divided into two heavily compartmentalized sections, creating a stark separation from the ground floor and obscuring the barn’s original volume. The renovation focused on simplifying the layout, unveiling the full architectural potential of the space. A striking, cathedral-like distribution hall now rises nine meters high, structuring the two levels with a sense of grandeur. To amplify natural light, side walls were fitted with interior-shuttered windows, gently diffusing daylight between the bedrooms and the hall. This clever design introduces a “cabin within a house” effect, fostering visual connections between children and adults through dynamic sightlines. Additionally, a skylight was introduced between the first floor and the ground level, brightening a once-shadowed area. Positioned just beyond the entrance hall, this feature creates a theatrical reveal, drawing the visitor’s gaze upward toward the newly enhanced spaces.
Today, the building’s original volume is restored, showcasing the breathtaking scale of this nearly 12-meter-high barn. The material palette blends warmth and durability: walls are clad in upcycled wood reclaimed from historic European barns, while soft lighting highlights the preserved timber framework, adding an air of timeless charm.
