Phased Renovation of a Family Home in Ixelles, Brussels - 300m2
This renovation project began with a small ground-floor studio before gradually extending to the entire house. A new staircase was designed, the attic was transformed into a master suite with a lounge area and en-suite shower room. The kitchen, dining room, stairwell, and an additional bathroom were completely reimagined.
Built in the 1930s, the house needed to retain its original charm while adapting to contemporary living. Every intervention was carefully planned to preserve its architectural character while correcting visual inconsistencies. A standalone staircase leading to the top floor was designed as a discreet volume, blending seamlessly into the existing wooden doors for a harmonious aesthetic. The interior layout was reconfigured to enhance natural light. The kitchen and dining room were swapped and unified by removing a wall, opening up the space to the outdoors. The dining area now enjoys an unobstructed view, perfect for long family dinners, while the kitchen—positioned between the living and dining areas—functions as a fluid, cross-through space, seamlessly connected to the circular flow around the stairwell.
Materials were chosen for their timeless elegance: a green terrazzo countertop paired with delicate custom-made iron shelving, herringbone parquet flooring, and soft hues that enhance the stairwell, painted in a striking blue. The bathroom exudes warmth with green and black Bejmat tiles arranged in a bold geometric pattern, complemented by soft pink tones and an upcycled vanity unit.
“This renovation strikes a balance between authenticity and modernity, creating bright, dynamic spaces that reflect the spirit of their inhabitants.”
